Dance artist Shion Skye Carter and Japanese calligraphy artist Kisyuu collaborate to adapt traditional and contemporary art forms, while celebrating their shared Japanese heritage. Their short film Flow Tide has been featured in events including Powell Street Festival (Vancouver), Moving Images Video Dance Festival (Cyprus), and the VanLive! LED screen at Granville and Robson Street for City of Vancouver’s Public Art Program. Now, Flow Tide 2022 exists as a live performance, and has been presented across Vancouver. Flow Tide 2022 explores the relationship between contemporary dance and calligraphy. Writing ‘kanji’ using giant calligraphy brushes on fabric, Shion and Kisyuu’s movements are influenced by the tools they use and the surrounding natural environment. Shion embodies the sensation of flowing ink, while Kisyuu’s dance takes place through her brush. Each brushstroke is a call and response, an abstract conversation representing the artists’ connections to their Japanese roots, to their art forms, and to one another.
