Kūsou 空相 - An immersive audio-visual installation

Kūsou is an immersive audio-visual installation. The primary visual and sound sources for Kūsou are respectively Japanese calligraphy and Western flute. The calligraphy is represented as dynamic 3D objects through real-time computer graphics and rendered spatially in the exhibit space as a continuously transforming visual scenery. Similarly, the audible scenery consists of acoustic and electronically transformed flute sounds. The audience plays a special role in Kūsou.

The Kūsou artwork production team was formed through an international and interdisciplinary collaboration of four artists in Japan and Canada, each member bringing their expertise from the respective artistic field. The team comprises Japanese calligrapher Aiko Hatanaka (Tokyo), flutist Mark Takeshi McGregor (Vancouver), video artist Ryo Kanda (Tokyo), and soundscape artist and interactive system developer Yota Kobayashi (Vancouver). This installation is produced by Studio Program Sounds and presented in collaboration with New Media Gallery, Anvil Centre, and Formscape Arts Society with financial and in-kind support from Canada Council for the Arts, Vancouver New Music, ICICS, University of British Columbia- School of Music, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.

空相は、没入型のオーディオビジュアル・インスタレーションです。空相の主なビジュアルとサウンドの源は、それぞれ日本の書道と西洋のフルートです。書道は、リアルタイムのコンピュータグラフィックスによってダイナミックな3Dオブジェクトとして表現され、展示空間において連続的に変化する視覚的な風景として映し出されます。同様に、聴覚的な風景は、音響と電子的に変換されたフルートの音で構成されています。観客は空相において特別な役割を担っています。

The Right to Remain! Conversation Circles for SRO Tenants and their Supporters 留まる権利！SRO入居者とその支援者のためのカンバセーションサークル

The Right to Remain Research Collective hosts a series of informal conversation circles, complete with food, film, and fun. A short film about the community’s long-standing pursuit of rent control for SRO tenants, including recent “victories” like the City of Vancouver’s vacancy control bylaw will be featured. Conversation circles will be grounded in the understanding that a key missing ingredient for improving people’s lives is the tenants themselves, who, when adequately resourced, and trusted, know what is best for their own lives and buildings. Just as the Japanese Canadians who once lived in and even built SROs, tenants today find ways to survive, even thrive, against so much adversity through a culture of mutual support and a collective sense of place.

Right to Remain Research Collectiveは、食事、映画、そして楽しい時間を過ごすための非公式なカンバセーションサークルを開催しています。バンクーバー市の空室対策条例のような最の「勝利」を含め、SROテナントの家賃統制を長年追求してきたコミュニティについての短編映画も上映される予定です。カンバセーションサークルは、人々の生活を改善するために欠けている重要な要素はテナント自身であり、テナントが十分な資源と信頼を得ていれば、自分たちの生活と建物にとって何がベストかを知っているという理解に基づいて行われます。かつてSROに住み、SROを建設した日系カナダ人のように、現在のテナントは、相互支援と集団意識という文化を通じて、多くの逆境を生き抜き、さらには繁栄する方法を見出しているのです。

Explore the fundamentals of machine learning in this workshop led by Hope Akello that combines communication with each other and with machines. Friends and family will work together to create an immersive art installation with communicative gestures, poses, and movements inspired by Yota Kobayashi's Kūsou 空相 at Anvil Theatre. Begin by teaching a computer to respond to your movements and end with a visual digital artwork generated by a computer. This workshop will use creative technology like iPads and Microbits to activate a fun and engaging art activity. Parental supervision is required.
Hope Akello is a designer and educator teaching computational design thinking. Hope is passionate about design and its ability to find and communicate meaning to the world. Utilizing design as a vehicle for social justice and anti-oppression, Hope strives to design meaningful experiences and telling stories from perspectives not often realized through design.

Iaido is a traditional Samurai martial art using Japanese swords. The Vancouver Eishin-Ryu Iaido Club practices the classical form of iaido, known as Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu. This martial art dates back over 450 years and is unbroken in its transmission through the ages. They will demonstrate traditional forms of sword combat.
They will demonstrate Iaido, traditional sword combat form (the art of drawing a sword).

Noor Dance Company ヌーア・ダンス・カンパニー

Noor Dance Company is a Middle Eastern dance company founded by Maki (Vancouver) & Negma (Victoria) in 2012 with experience in performance and teaching around the world. They are joined by Lana who teaches classes in Vancouver. Noor Dance offers training in-company classes, performs at various cultural events, and produces their own shows around Vancouver.
Maki and Lana along with the Noor Dance students will be performing with both solo and group numbers representing different styles of Middle Eastern Dance. They will end with a finale that will engage the audience and encourage them to join in!
ヌーア・ダンス・カンパニーは、世界中でパフォーマンスや指導の経験を積んだMaki（バンクーバー）とNegma（ビクトリア）によって2012年に設立された中東系ダンスカンパニーです。そこにバンクーバーでクラスを教えているLanaが加わりました。ヌーア・ダンスは、カンパニー内クラスでのトレーニング、様々な文化イベントでのパフォーマンス、そしてバンクーバーを中心に独自のショーをプロデュースしています。

The first Canadian youth Taiko group founded in 1993 based in Vancouver, which has been recognized as one of the most exciting performing art youth groups in BC. They are a Taiko ensemble based on traditional Japanese Taiko drumming. Bujinkan Taka Seigi Dojo Vancouver 武神館 Taka Seigi道場

Location: Japanese Language School (Tatami Room)

Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu is a Japanese martial system composed of nine warrior schools of Samurai and Ninjutsu traditions with lineage dating back more than 1,000 years. Studied internationally by military and security organizations working in high-threat situations, grandmaster Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi’s Bujinkan system has received many elite awards including two from the Emperor of Japan. No other Japanese martial art has received this. Dai-shihan Paul Mann, 15th dan and head of the Bujinkan Vancouver Taka Seigi Dojo, has travelled regularly to Japan over the past 24 years to study under Dr. Hatsumi.
武神館武道体術は、１０００年以上前から侍と忍術の伝統を受け継ぐ９つの流派よりなる日本の武術です。国際的に、危険度の高い現場で働く軍事、保安機関により研究され、初見良昭師の武人館は、天皇陛下からの２つの賞を含む、数多くの賞を受賞しました。他のどの日本武術も天皇陛下からの賞を受賞したことはありません。武術館バンクーバー、Taka Seigi道場の代表、大師範であるポール・マンは、１５段を所持し、過去２４年以上定期的に日本へ渡航し、初見館長のもと武術を極めています。

The d.A.B. Trio is a Vancouver organ trio led by Jason de Couto on organ, and features Alvin Brendan on guitar and Bernie Arai on drums. All three members are active and integral musicians in the local music scene and work in a variety of ensembles as leaders and sidemen. They have come together to form a unique and dynamic sound rarely heard in Vancouver, featuring the mighty Hammond Organ. The group plays a mix of Jazz, Funk, Pop, Latin, and Blues music, with influences ranging from Jimmy Smith, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Jimmy McGriff, to Larry Goldings, Sam Yahel, and Joey deFrancesco.
Enjoy a Jazz Organ Trio (with drums and guitar) playing original compositions and standards.

Shoheijuku Aikido Canada 祥平塾合気道カナダ

Location: Japanese Language School (Japanese Hall)

Shoheijuku Aikido Canada was established to promote the art of Aikido as practiced by Morito Suganama Sensei (Aikikai 8th Dan), who is based in Fukuoka, Japan. They offer Aikido classes to all levels of students, including for children. Their main dojo is located at Trout Lake Community Centre in East Vancouver. They have a second dojo in Surrey, and another on the Sunshine Coast in Roberts Creek.
Their demonstration will begin with a short warm up, led by our Sensei Tamami Nakashimada 6th Dan. They will demonstrate various techniques as uke and nage from strikes and grabs and will also demonstrate advanced techniques showing how to roll, how to disarm weapons, and how to protect oneself.
祥平塾合気道カナダは、福岡を拠点とする菅沼守人先生（合気会八段）の実践する合気道の技を普及させるために設立されました。合気道のクラスは子ども達を含むすべてのレベルの生徒を対象としています。メインの道場はイーストバンクーバーにあるトラウトレイク・コミュニティセンターにあります。サレーには第二道場、サンシャインコーストのロバーツクリークには別の道場があります。

Vancouver Ikebana Association バンクーバー生け花協会

Vancouver Ikebana Association is a non-profit organization, featuring Ikebana floral arrangements (Japanese style). Ikebana, the Japanese word for flower arrangement, is based upon certain principles of art which are recognized the world over. The love of lines so characteristic of all Oriental art rather than the appreciation of form and colour is perhaps the most salient feature in differentiating Japanese flower arrangement from all others.
They will have ikebana displays and demonstrations inside the Vancouver Buddhist Temple. Demonstrations will be on both Saturday, July 30, 1:30-2:15pm and 4:00-4:45pm, and Sunday, July 31, 1:30-2:15pm.
バンクーバー生け花協会は、生け花（日本式フラワーアレンジメント）を専門とする非営利団体です。生け花は、世界中で認められている芸術の理に基づいています。東洋美術の特徴である、形や色彩ではなく、線を楽しむことが、日本の生け花を他のものと区別する最も顕著な点であると言えるかもしれません。

Otowa Ryu Japanese Dance Group was founded in Vancouver in 1971, and since then, they have been participating in cultural events and festivals across Canada. On October 24, 2021, they celebrated their 50th anniversary with a concert at Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby.
音羽流日本舞踊会は1971年にバンクーバーで結成され、以来、カナダ各地の文化イベントやお祭りに参加しています。2021年10月24日には、バーナビーのマイケル・J・フォックス・シアターで50周年を記念したコンサートを開催しました。
They plan to perform a selection of Japanese folk dances and shin buyo (contemporary Japanese dances).

CANCELED - Vancouver Save Article 9　バンクーバー九条の会

VSA9 was established in 2005; an organization to keep the peace clause, article 9 of the Japanese constitution. The Article 9 display is composed of photos, stories, sketch panels, and historical information concerning the A-bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It shows people the danger of atomic bombs as well as nuclear power plants, which was tragically demonstrated by the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident.
The title of this 2022 display is "Climate and Nuclear Power Plants", a lecture with slides led by Eiichiro Ochiai. Eiichiro Ochiai is a retired chemistry professor and has been working on radiation issues since Fukushima NPP accident in 2011.
バンクーバー九条の会は日本国憲法第9条の平和条項を守るための組織として、2005年に設立されました。広島と長崎の原爆に関する写真、ストーリー、スケッチ、関連する史実を含む展示です。また、福島原子力発電所の事故が示す原子力発電所の危険性も解説しています。
今回の2022年の展示タイトルは「気候と原子力発電所」で、落合栄一郎氏を講師に迎え、スライドを使った講演を行います。落合栄一郎氏は元化学教授で、2011年の福島原発事故以来、放射線問題に取り組んでいます。

360 Riot Walk is an interactive walking tour that utilizes 360 video technology to tell the story of the 1907 Anti-Asian Riots in Vancouver. It traces the history and route of the mob that attacked the Chinese Canadian and Japanese Canadian communities following the demonstration and parade organized by the Asiatic Exclusion League in Vancouver. The tour is approximately 2 hours in length, followed by a post-tour reflection where refreshments will be served. Sterilized tablets and headphones will be provided. Maximum 10 participants per tour.

井田裕基（イダ・ヒロモト）（監督、振付師、俳優）
Hiromoto studied drama and performance in Tokyo and has been a professional dancer, actor, and producer in Canada for over 30 years. He has worked with numerous dance companies, film, and was a Jessie award nominee as best supporting actor in the play “Serpent Kills” (1997).
Hiromoto moved to Nelson in 2000 and established his own company, Ichigo-Ichieh New Theatre in 2006. Hiromoto was appointed as the City of Nelson’s Cultural Ambassador in 2012.
Supported by “Made in BC Dance on Tour” through the Vancouver Foundation Digital Projects Fund, Ida has produced this solo dance piece, “Homecoming 2020”, that is a love letter to his mother, an exploration of belonging and a manifestation of the nature of cycle.
井田裕基氏は東京で演劇とパフォーマンスを学び、カナダで30年以上プロのダンサー、俳優、プロデューサーとして活躍しています。数々のダンスカンパニーや映画で活躍し、舞台『Serpent Kills』（1997年）ではジェシー賞の助演男優賞にノミネートされるなど、その活動は多岐にわたります。
井田氏は2000年にネルソンに移住し、2006年に自身のカンパニー、Ichigo-Ichieh New Theatre を設立。2012年、ネルソン市文化大使に任命されました。
バンクーバー財団のデジタルプロジェクト基金による「Made in BC Dance on Tour」の支援を受け、井田氏はこのソロダンス作品「Homecoming 2020」を制作しました。これは母親へのラブレターであり、帰属意識の探求、循環の本質の表れでもあります。

Toby Mukai (Tobes) is 50% Japanese, 50% English, and 100% Vancouverite. He is an aspiring composer, musician, and rapper. In March 2008 he suffered a workplace accident (fell three stories off a building) that caused him to go into a recovery program. Despite the odds in November 2017, he received a Diploma of Continuing Studies in Digital Music Studies from Langara College. Now Tobes volunteers for the Vancouver Adaptive Music Society (VAMS). Dillon RINO Longson is an up-and-coming rapper in the Vancouver scene. They have been collaborating for the past 10 years.

Join Giorgio Magnananensi, Artistic Director of Vancouver New Music and internationally renowned composer and conductor, in conversation with flutist Mark Takeshi McGregor (Vancouver), video artist Ryo Kanda (Tokyo), and soundscape artist and interactive system developer Yota Kobayashi (Vancouver) of the Kūsou 空相 artistic team as they share insight behind the scenes of this innovative installation. Kūsou 空相 is on view at the Anvil Theatre in New Westminster, July 28 through August 3.

Sawagi Taiko さわぎ太鼓

Formed in 1990, Sawagi Taiko is the first all Asian women's taiko group in Canada. They are a multi-generational group of women of East Asian and Indigenous heritage, brought together by our shared passion for Japanese drumming. “Sawagi” means to “cause a commotion” in Japanese. With thunderous drumbeats, stirring vocals, & martial arts inspired choreography, they share the empowerment and exhilaration we feel through taiko with their diverse audiences. They harness the power of the drum to support feminist & social justice ideals. Their spirit, creativity and mutual respect can be felt both on & off the stage.

Ko-Ko (Kohei Yoshino) Ko-Ko (コウヘイ・ヨシノ)

Kohei Yoshino is a singer-songwriter based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Since he picked up an acoustic guitar at the age of 10, Kohei has actively performed in bands in countries such as Japan, Mexico, and Canada. Currently, he spends most of his time entertaining locals and tourists while busking on Granville Island and playing gigs such as weddings, corporate dinners, and other private events.
His performance and setlist consist of beautiful and nostalgic Japanese folk songs as well as songs that he penned in English and Japanese.
コウヘイ・ヨシノは、BC州バンクーバーに拠点を置くシンガーソングライター。10歳でアコースティックギターを手にして以来、日本、メキシコ、カナダなどの国で活躍しています。現在は、グランビルアイランドでストリートパフォーマンスを行なったり、結婚式、企業の夕食会やプライベートイベントなどで演奏をしながら、地元の人々や観光客を魅了しています。

BUSENKAI Canada 武仙会カナダ

BUSENKAI is formed by members of the Tamiya-Ryu Iaijutsu and Iwama Shinshin Aikido Canada branch supervised by Kenny Sembokuya Sensei, student of Hitohira Saito Sensei. Kenny Sembokuya Sensei was appointed as an instructor for the Busenkai Tokyo Branch in 2010, as well as the Head instructor for Canada, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong kong and China.
武仙会は、斉藤仁平先生の生徒であるケニー仙北谷先生を中心に、田宮流居合術・岩間神信合気道カナダ支部のメンバーで結成されています。ケニー仙北谷先生は2010年に武仙会東京支部、カナダ、マレーシア、インドネシア、台湾、香港、中国支部の指導員として就任されました。
BUSENKAI will demonstrate Taijutsu and Jo/ Ken sticks with their Aikido children's class, ages 7-13 years old. Their adult class will demonstrate Kumitachi using Ken and Jo, and Tamiyaryu Iaijutsu members will demonstrate in groups showing Omotenowaza. Urawaza for higher Dan students. Their final demonstration will be by Sembokuya sensei.

Asahi Memorial Service

The Vancouver Asahi was a Japanese Canadian baseball club in Vancouver. They were one of the most dominant amateur teams in the city. The team played out of the Powell Street Grounds (officially Oppenheimer Park) until the war broke out between Japan and the Allied Forces in 1941. Its members were interned by the federal government and the team was disbanded in 1942. They never played another game even after the war ended in 1945.
The Asahi Baseball Association was first established to commemorate the Asahi on the 100 year anniversary and now gives youth the opportunity to celebrate the much-loved sport of baseball and Asahi. On behalf of the Asahi Baseball Association, Reverend Aoki of Vancouver Buddhist Church conducts a memorial service to pay tribute to those Asahi players at the Powell Street Festival. Everybody will be welcome to join the commemoration at memorial service.
Every 2-3 years, Asahi Baseball Association form a team to travel to Japan for the players and the parents to enjoy Japanese culture and the Japanese way of baseball. Learn more about their forthcoming trip to Japan at the Asahi Pitch Game in the Interactive Zone.

Shion & Kisyuu 詩音と姫洲

Dance artist Shion Skye Carter and Japanese calligraphy artist Kisyuu collaborate to adapt traditional and contemporary art forms, while celebrating their shared Japanese heritage. Their short film Flow Tide has been featured in events including Powell Street Festival (Vancouver), Moving Images Video Dance Festival (Cyprus), and the VanLive! LED screen at Granville and Robson Street for City of Vancouver’s Public Art Program. Now, Flow Tide 2022 exists as a live performance, and has been presented across Vancouver.
Flow Tide 2022 explores the relationship between contemporary dance and calligraphy. Writing ‘kanji’ using giant calligraphy brushes on fabric, Shion and Kisyuu’s movements are influenced by the tools they use and the surrounding natural environment. Shion embodies the sensation of flowing ink, while Kisyuu’s dance takes place through her brush. Each brushstroke is a call and response, an abstract conversation representing the artists’ connections to their Japanese roots, to their art forms, and to one another. This work began as a film in 2020, and a site-specific performance in 2021; this year's version deepens the artists' movement in connection to the larger-than-life calligraphy brushes, presented in a new performance space.

Flow Tide 2022は、コンテンポラリーダンスと書道の関係性を探求しています。巨大な筆を使って布に「漢字」を書く詩音と姫洲の動きは、彼らが使う道具や周囲の自然環境に影響を受けています。紫苑は墨の流れる感覚を体現し、貴舟は筆を通してダンスを行います。それぞれの筆の動きは掛け合いであり、彼らの日本のルーツ、芸術様式、そして互いへのつながりを表す抽象的な会話であります。この作品は、2020年に映画として、2021年に特定地域向けのパフォーマンスとして始まりましたが、今年は新たなパフォーマンス空間で、より大きな書道の筆とアーティストの動きを深化させています。

Onibana Taiko 鬼花太鼓

Formed in 2016, Onibana Taiko are three veterans of Vancouver’s Taiko community whose performance presentations draw from Japanese folk music and dance, such as minyo and matsuri, to classical Kabuki, to recontextualize the burgeoning genre of ensemble taiko drumming. In addition to sourcing their Japanese roots, these Nikkei (Japanese Canadians) also intersperse their feminist punk rock, queercore, jazz, world beats and pop influences and aesthetics into their performance. Onibana Taiko are E. Kage, Noriko Kobayashi and Leslie Komori whose collective depth of performance and taiko experiences combine to over 100 years. Onibana loves the musical wisdom we amass as we mature. We refuse to age quietly and love making big sounds waves and body embracing music!
Onibana Taiko is kick-ass taiko meets traditional Japanese folk-art forms meet feminist queer punk aesthetics. They play taiko combined with our uber tactile and full-body resonating beats with the driving sounds of shamisen (Japanese banjo), and soul-piercing traditional Japanese vocals and fue (a wooden flute). Onibana Taiko invites audience members to commune with our ancestors through Obon dance and music (sort of like a Buddhist Japanese Dia De Los Muertos celebration).
2016年に結成された鬼花太鼓は、バンクーバーの太鼓コミュニティの3人のベテランで、日本の民謡や祭りのような日本の民俗音楽や舞踊から古典的な歌舞伎まで取り入れた、急成長しているアンサンブル太鼓のジャンルを現代の異なる状況・時代背景などに照らして考えなおした演出を行なっています。このトリオの日系カナダ人は、日本のルーツを調達するだけでなく、フェミニストなパンクロック、クイアコア、ジャズ、ワールドビート、ポップの影響や美学を取り入れた演出を行なっています。鬼花太鼓は、E・カゲ、ノリコ・コバヤシ、レスリー・コモリで、100年以上の演奏と太鼓の経験の集団的な深みが融合しています。鬼花は、成長するにつれ築く音楽の知恵に強い関心があります。そして静かに年を重ねることには従わず、大きな音の波と音楽を受け入れる体を作りだすのが大好きです！
鬼花太鼓は、日本の伝統的な民芸の形とフェミニストのクイアパンクの美学を取り入れたクールな太鼓です。三味線の猛烈なサウンドと、魂を突き刺す伝統的な日本のボーカルと笛を備えた、とても刺激的な全身の共鳴するビートを組み合わせた太鼓を演奏します。鬼花太鼓は、盆踊りや音楽（日本の仏教徒の死者の日を祝うようなもの）を通して、観客を先祖と対話しているような体験へと招きます。

Meeting in the middle of two worlds, violinist Kytami and DJ/producer Phonik Ops, offer a truly unconventional musical experience. Kytami commands the dance floor with her ferocious energy, while Phonik Ops mixes heavy bass tunes. Together they create a performance and sound like no other.
There are fewer acts on the west coast combining live instrumentation, high energy, and gritty bass with ferocity and craft than violinist Kytami and DJ/Producer Phonik Ops. They have made it their mission to create a truly unique sound that would be instantly recognizable as their own all the while drawing on their shared love of Drum n Bass, Hip Hop, Punk and Dance music.
2つの異なる世界で出会ったヴァイオリニストのカイタミとDJ/プロデューサーのフォニック・オプスは、真に型破りな音楽体験を楽しませてくれます。カイタミは猛烈なエネルギーでダンスフロアを支配し、フォニック・オプスはヘビーなベースの曲をミックスします。それらが一緒になって他に類を見ないパフォーマンスとサウンドを作り出します。

Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art based upon the principle of harmony through connection, balance, and timing. It is an extremely powerful form of self-defense that is also gentle and non-aggressive: carefully controlling an attacker using the attacker’s own energy. Strength is not emphasized because the use of physical strength is unnecessary. Shioda Aikido is the Aikido of Gozo Shioda; Morihei Ueshiba’s most outstanding student, and preserves the hard style, pre-war teachings of O'Sensei.
Their dynamic demonstration will exhibit the powerful techniques of Shioda Aikido, highlighting beginners to advanced practitioners.

Dahaza ダハザ

Dahaza is a wagakki (Japanese instrumental) group formed by Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos and joined by John Nguyen, Nori Akagi and Anny Lin. The group share their deep passion and connection with Japanese music and culture, focusing on new and traditional pieces that incorporate the taiko drum, shakuhachi, shamisen, and shinobue. “Daha” (Pounding Waves) is the title of a famous classical shakuhachi meditation piece which is a metaphor for breaking through one’s obstacles in life to reach success, happiness, and ultimately, enlightenment.
Dahaza will perform a variety of original and modern pieces consisting of traditional Japanese instruments that include taiko, shakuhachi, shamisen, sanshin, shinobue, and perhaps a surprise or two.
ダハザは、アルクヴィン・リュウゼン・ラモスが結成し、ジョン・グエン、ノリ・アカギ、アニー・リンが参加した和楽器のグループです。グループは、和太鼓、尺八、三味線、篠笛を取り入れた新しい伝統的な作品にフォーカスし、日本の音楽や文化と彼らの深い情熱やつながりを伝えています。「ダハ」（ドンドンという高まり）は、人生の障害を乗り越えて成功、幸福、そして最終的には悟りに到達するためのたとえを表す、有名な古典的尺八の瞑想作品のタイトルです。

Kūsou 空相 - An immersive audio-visual installation

Kūsou is an immersive audio-visual installation. The primary visual and sound sources for Kūsou are respectively Japanese calligraphy and Western flute. The calligraphy is represented as dynamic 3D objects through real-time computer graphics and rendered spatially in the exhibit space as a continuously transforming visual scenery. Similarly, the audible scenery consists of acoustic and electronically transformed flute sounds. The audience plays a special role in Kūsou.
The Kūsou artwork production team was formed through an international and interdisciplinary collaboration of four artists in Japan and Canada, each member bringing their expertise from the respective artistic field. The team comprises Japanese calligrapher Aiko Hatanaka (Tokyo), flutist Mark Takeshi McGregor (Vancouver), video artist Ryo Kanda (Tokyo), and soundscape artist and interactive system developer Yota Kobayashi (Vancouver). This installation is produced by Studio Program Sounds and presented in collaboration with New Media Gallery, Anvil Centre, and Formscape Arts Society with financial and in-kind support from Canada Council for the Arts, Vancouver New Music, ICICS, University of British Columbia- School of Music, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
空相は、没入型のオーディオビジュアル・インスタレーションです。空相の主なビジュアルとサウンドの源は、それぞれ日本の書道と西洋のフルートです。書道は、リアルタイムのコンピュータグラフィックスによってダイナミックな3Dオブジェクトとして表現され、展示空間において連続的に変化する視覚的な風景として映し出されます。同様に、聴覚的な風景は、音響と電子的に変換されたフルートの音で構成されています。観客は空相において特別な役割を担っています。
空相アートワーク制作チームは、日本とカナダの4人のアーティストが、それぞれの専門分野を生かしながら、国際的かつ多分野にわたるコラボレーションを通して結成されました。チームは書道家のハタナカ・アイコ（東京）、フルート奏者のマクレガー・タケシ（バンクーバー）、ビデオアーティストのカンダ・リョウ（東京）、サウンドスケープアーティストでインタラクティブシステム開発者のコバヤシ・ヨウタ（バンクーバー）から成り立っています。

We perform experimental Japanese ambient music and poems in a magical space which have been performed at the Powell Festival many times.
Koku is a musician who performs both in Canada and abroad. He creates a mysterious space using a variety of instruments such as hand pans, didgeridoos, and synths.
Sora is a poet based in Vancouver.
During the COVID period, we have further devolved each other's fields to provide a sometimes weird, sometimes moving world of music and poetry.

Kotojiro with CoSei コトジロウとコセイ

Pico Masaki is a singer songwriter and a koto/guzheng player. By playing these instruments, she seeks to express the beauty of Japanese culture full of zen and refinement.
Seira Hayakashi has studied piano at the University of Victoria and holds a Bachelor of Music. She has played keyboard in a Rock Band “Cherry Cola” with Tal Backman (Victoria, B.C.), who is best known for his late 1999 hit, "She's So High".
Yujiro Nakajima has been playing Brazilian music and jazz as a soloist and with groups at various venues and has been a regular performer at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
~Traditional Music Infused with Today's Culture~
A koto/guzheng & guitar/ukulele & piano trio with an eclectic repertoire of traditional, folk, latin, Celtic, new age and world music (originals and covers). They incorporate the koto (known as guzheng in China), a traditional Asian instrument, into contemporary music, as well as playing it alongside ubiquitous Western instruments, the guitar and the piano. Their music shows how traditions from different cultures can be adapted for modern styles, and be combined to perform together, as well as maintaining and continuing connections to the past.

Katori Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu 香取神道流剣術

Katori Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu is a classical martial art focusing on sword fighting techniques. They train to fight with traditional samurai weapons such as the long and short sword, fighting staff, spear, and naginata (halberd). Modern kendo and iaido were born from the older schools of kenjutsu but Katori Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu techniques focus on the complete warrior who can utilize all weapons in practical combat at full speed.
香取神道流剣術は、剣術に重点を置いた古典的な武術です。長刀、短刀、杖、槍、薙刀など、侍の伝統的な武器を使って戦う訓練をしています。現代の剣道や居合道は剣術の古い流派から生まれたものですが、香取神道流剣術の技術は、すべての武器を全速力で実戦に使える完全な戦士に焦点を合わせています。

Kyudo Association of Canada – Vancouver カナダ弓道連盟バンクーバー

KAC Vancouver is a local group which studies the art of Japanese Archery known as Kyudo. Kyudo strives to improve one's self through the shooting. Kyudo is not limited to the act of shooting; it also encompasses all movement and postures in the dojo. KAC Vancouver is a member of the Kyudo Association of Canada, which is affiliated with the International Kyudo Federation based in Tokyo, Japan.
KAC Vancouver will perform a five-person tai-hai accompanied by a narrator describing the performance for the audience. In this performance, each person shoots two arrows. They will also give a demonstration of the makiwara (close target), gomuyumi (practice bow), and sharei (ceremonial shooting) to show the audience other forms of practice.
KAC（カナダ弓道連盟バンクーバー）は、日本弓道の美を追求します。弓道は、射の動作だけでなく、道場における様々な動き、姿勢、精神状態なども重視します。KACバンクーバーは、東京に拠点を置く国際弓道連盟に所属するカナダ弓道連盟に加盟しています。
KACバンクーバーは、観客へ実演を説明する解説者とともに、5人組の体配を披露します。この実演では、一人二本の矢を放ちます。また、巻藁（近場の的）、ゴム弓（練習用弓）、射礼（儀式用）の実演を行い、観客にその他の弓道の方法も紹介します。

Southern Wave Okinawan Music and Dance Society サザンウェーブ沖縄の唄と踊り愛好会

Southern Wave Okinawan Music and Dance Society was founded as a nonprofit organization in 2020 during the pandemic. The group's aim is to share our passion and joy of playing the sanshin, which is an Okinawan three-stringed banjo, and Ryukyu buyo, which is Okinawan traditional dance, in the community to be a part of cultural diversity. They are also hoping to invite Okinawan artisans and performing artists in the future.
They will perform Okinawan songs Shima Uta 島唄 (a contemporary song with the sanshin & the shima daiko), Tancha Mē谷茶前 (a folk song with dance), Yotsu Dake (with Ryuku buyō, Okinawan classical dance) and tiNshagu nu hana (a folk song). They will also demonstrate how to dance kachāsī, Okinawan folk dance, and ask the audience to dance together!
サザンウェーブ沖縄の唄と踊り愛好会は、パンデミックの時期2020年に非営利団体として設立されました。グループは、沖縄の三線バンジョーである三線と沖縄の伝統舞踊である琉球舞踊の情熱や喜びを共有し、コミュニティで多様な文化の一部になることを目指しています。また、将来的には沖縄の職人やパフォーミング・アーティストを招待したいと考えています。

Ko has been teaching YouTube singers, V-tubers, idol singers from all over the world since he is the only certified Japanese vocal coach in the world who can teach how to sing native level Japanese singing to English Natives.
Ko will run a workshop to teach how to sing Japanese songs to English speakers. Participants will learn the basic of singing Japanese songs and you also have a chance to work on their voice with a vocal coach through a short voice lesson during the class. There is no need to be able to read or speak Japanese to join the workshop.
コウはカナダのバンクーバーを拠点とする日本語を第一言語とする日本人のボーカルコーチです。英語話者に日本語での歌唱力を向上させるための指導を専門としています。コウは、英語を母国語とするネイティブスピーカーに母国語レベルの日本語の歌の歌い方を教えることができる世界で唯一認定された日本のボーカルコーチで、世界中のYouTubeシンガー、Vチューバー、アイドル歌手に教えてきました。

360 Riot Walk is an interactive walking tour that utilizes 360 video technology to tell the story of the 1907 Anti-Asian Riots in Vancouver. It traces the history and route of the mob that attacked the Chinese Canadian and Japanese Canadian communities following the demonstration and parade organized by the Asiatic Exclusion League in Vancouver. The tour is approximately 2 hours in length, followed by a post-tour reflection where refreshments will be served. Sterilized tablets and headphones will be provided. Maximum 10 participants per tour.

Established in 1994, Za Daikon, an amateur Japanese theatrical group, has been producing and performing plays and stage readings in Japanese annually at the Powell Street Festival, other community events, Japanese language schools, and at senior care facilities. Once upon a time, in a small village, there lived an elderly woman. Her husband had recently passed away, and she was very lonely. She worshipped his memorial tablet every day. One day, a traveling monk came to her seeking a place to stay for the night. She offered him a delicious meal, thinking that he would give her husband a merciful sutra. And the monk did give a sutra....
1994年に設立された日本のアマチュア劇団、座・だいこんは、毎年パウエル祭をはじめとする地域のイベントや日本語学校、老人ホームなどで日本語の芝居や朗読劇を制作・上演しています。演劇は、可能な限り英語の字幕と吹き替えで上演しています。座・だいこんと一緒に、英語字幕付きの日本語による演劇公演をお楽しみください。
むかしむかしのことじゃった。ある小さな村に一人のおばあさんが住んでおった。つい最近おじいさんを亡くしたばかりで、寂しくてしかたがない。毎日毎日仏様を拝んでおった。ある日のこと、一人の旅の坊さんがやってきた。道に迷ったので一晩泊めてほしいという。おばあさんは、お坊さんならおじいさんにありがたいお経をあげてもらえるじゃろうと思って、大そうなおもてなしをした。そうしてありがたいお経をあげてもらうことになったのだが…。

SenJu (千樹) is a piano duo with a focus on Japanese music. Their repertoire ranges from the Meiji era to the present, and they love to perform nostalgic and sentimental music as well as upbeat ones the audience can dance to! Mikihiro and Chihiro are both originally from Japan, but they now call Canada home. Besides playing piano, Mikihiro enjoys palm reading, and has read over 2000 palms for over 15 years!
SenJu (千樹) will perform three beloved songs arranged for duet. Hana by Rentaro Taki is a song admiring natural beauty. The duet arrangement by Mr. Ichiro Nagahara. Ghibli Medley includes famous Ghibli film themes, composed by Mr. Joe Hisaishi. Lupin the Third is a popular anime about heists from the 70’s, and its opening song written by Yuji Ohno was a big hit. The duet arrangement is by Kazuya Narushima.
千樹は日本の音楽を中心としたピアノの二人組です。レパートリーは明治時代から現在まで多岐にわたり、ノスタルジックで感傷的な音楽だけでなく、観客が踊れるアップビートな音楽を演奏をするのを大いに楽しみます！ミキヒロとチヒロはどちらも日本出身ですが、今ではカナダを自分たちの故郷と呼んでいます。ミキヒロはピアノを弾くだけでなく、手相占いもやっており、15年以上にわたって2000人以上の手相を診ています！
千樹はデュエット用にアレンジした大のお気に入りの歌を３つ演奏します。瀧廉太郎の花は自然の美しさを賞賛する曲で、イチロウ・ナガハラさんによるアレンジ。ジブリメドレーには、久石譲氏が作曲した有名なジブリ映画のテーマが含まれています。ルパン三世は70年代の怪盗ルパンの人気アニメで、大野雄二氏に作られたオープニング曲が大ヒットしました。デュエットはカズヤ・ナルシマ氏にアレンジされています。

Kokoro Dance with Jo Passed Jo Passedとのココロダンス

Kokoro Dance was formed in 1986 by Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi who have choreographed over 200 dance works and performed across Canada, in the U.S., Europe, South America, Mexico, Cuba, and Japan. Jo Passed is guitarist, pianist, singer, Jo Hirabayashi, Barbara and Jay's son, bassist Téa Mei, and drummer Mac Lawrie.
Barbara and Jay will bring their butoh dance aesthetic to Jo Passed's music.

Katari Taiko: Canada’s first Taiko ensemble. In its 43rd year, this exhilarating drumming collective continues to pursue “a way to summon music from thunder.” Rooted in the Japanese Canadian experience and inspired by the social struggles and liberation movements of North America, it bridges cultures through athletic, powerful performance that is both dance and music. Let the drums talk!
Celebrating the tenacity of human spirit and earth’s cycle of destruction and renewal, Katari Taiko presents works inspired by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as well as some old favourite songs. Sen-No-Kaikyo by Japanese taiko master Eitetsu Hayashi speaks to the spirit of those responding on foot to aid victims of the Hanshin Earthquake in 1995. Rift by member Andrew Czink was inspired by the earth-changing flow of lava from the eruption of Kīlauea in 2018.
語り太鼓：カナダで最初に結成された太鼓アンサンブルです。43年目を迎える人を陽気にさせるこの太鼓集団は、「雷から音楽を呼びだす方法」を追求し続けています。日系カナダ人の経験に根ざし、北米の社会的闘争と解放運動に刺激を受け、ダンスと音楽の両方からなる運動的でパワフルなパフォーマンスを通じて文化の橋渡しします。ドラムに語らせましょう！

Banana Bread バナナブレッド

Banana bread is an acoustic-band based in Vancouver, Canada and Ko is the lead singer-songwriter of the band. He is also a Native Japanese vocal coach and specializes in teaching Japanese singing to English speakers. The band plays a mix of original songs and cover songs in English and Japanese. The band has been performing at various local festivals for the past couple of years including the Powell Street Festival, Richmond World Festival, and Surrey Fusion Festival.
Ko will be performing solo-acoustic live session with his guitar and ukulele. He will sing a mix of original and cover songs in Japanese and English. The vibes he creates singing mellow acoustic tunes will make the audience relaxed even in a festival mood.
バナナブレッドはカナダのバンクーバーに拠点を置くアコースティックバンドで、コウはバンドのリードを担当するシンガーソングライターです。また、日本語を第一言語とする日本語ボーカルコーチであり、英語を話す人に日本語の歌を教えることを専門としています。バンドはオリジナル曲とカバー曲を英語と日本語をミックスして演奏します。バンドはここ数年、パウエル祭、リッチモンドワールドフェスティバル、サレーフュージョンフェスティバルなど、様々な地元のフェスティバルに出演しています。

GO Taiko and Taiko 55 GO太鼓と太鼓55

GO Taiko is a new taiko group that began with students from Admiral Seymour and Waverley Elementary Schools. Their roots are from East Vancouver and Richmond. They try to bring a fresh energetic approach to their drumming. Taiko 55 is a group of seniors who love taiko drumming. They are based in Richmond and are role models for the younger generation. Together, GO Taiko and Taiko 55 have become a taiko family, that may be the only intergenerational taiko program in Canada.
This is GO Taiko's third appearance and Taiko 55's first time at PSF. We will feature traditional Japanese and North American taiko songs.
GO Taiko and Taiko 55 will present the power of the drums with the power of the generations!
GO太鼓は、アドミラルシーモア小学校とウェイバリー小学校の生徒で結成された新しい太鼓グループです。彼らのルーツはイーストバンクーバーからリッチモンドにあり、ドラムで新鮮かつエネルギッシュなアプローチを試みます。太鼓55は太鼓が大好きなシニアのグループです。リッチモンドに拠点を置き、若い世代のお手本となっています。GO太鼓と太鼓55は一緒になって、カナダで唯一の世代をまたぐ太鼓プログラムであるかもしれない太鼓ファミリーになりました。

Founded in 1988 to provide a creative outlet for women performing with the confines of a then largely male-dominated cultural tradition, JODAIKO continues to bring together some of the top professional women taiko artists currently based throughout North America. Following the custom of returning for the hometown matsuri, Jodaiko members gather together each year for Powell Street Festival to celebrate, cut loose, eat, and drum!

Kūsou 空相 - An immersive audio-visual installation

Kūsou is an immersive audio-visual installation. The primary visual and sound sources for Kūsou are respectively Japanese calligraphy and Western flute. The calligraphy is represented as dynamic 3D objects through real-time computer graphics and rendered spatially in the exhibit space as a continuously transforming visual scenery. Similarly, the audible scenery consists of acoustic and electronically transformed flute sounds. The audience plays a special role in Kūsou.
The Kūsou artwork production team was formed through an international and interdisciplinary collaboration of four artists in Japan and Canada, each member bringing their expertise from the respective artistic field. The team comprises Japanese calligrapher Aiko Hatanaka (Tokyo), flutist Mark Takeshi McGregor (Vancouver), video artist Ryo Kanda (Tokyo), and soundscape artist and interactive system developer Yota Kobayashi (Vancouver). This installation is produced by Studio Program Sounds and presented in collaboration with New Media Gallery, Anvil Centre, and Formscape Arts Society with financial and in-kind support from Canada Council for the Arts, Vancouver New Music, ICICS, University of British Columbia- School of Music, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
空相は、没入型のオーディオビジュアル・インスタレーションです。空相の主なビジュアルとサウンドの源は、それぞれ日本の書道と西洋のフルートです。書道は、リアルタイムのコンピュータグラフィックスによってダイナミックな3Dオブジェクトとして表現され、展示空間において連続的に変化する視覚的な風景として映し出されます。同様に、聴覚的な風景は、音響と電子的に変換されたフルートの音で構成されています。観客は空相において特別な役割を担っています。
空相アートワーク制作チームは、日本とカナダの4人のアーティストが、それぞれの専門分野を生かしながら、国際的かつ多分野にわたるコラボレーションを通して結成されました。チームは書道家のハタナカ・アイコ（東京）、フルート奏者のマクレガー・タケシ（バンクーバー）、ビデオアーティストのカンダ・リョウ（東京）、サウンドスケープアーティストでインタラクティブシステム開発者のコバヤシ・ヨウタ（バンクーバー）から成り立っています。

The team comprises Japanese calligrapher Aiko Hatanaka (Tokyo), flutist Mark Takeshi McGregor (Vancouver), video artist Ryo Kanda (Tokyo), and soundscape artist and interactive system developer Yota Kobayashi (Vancouver). This installation is produced by Studio Program Sounds and presented in collaboration with New Media Gallery, Anvil Centre, and Formscape Arts Society with financial and in-kind support from Canada Council for the Arts, Vancouver New Music, ICICS, University of British Columbia- School of Music, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
空相は、没入型のオーディオビジュアル・インスタレーションです。空相の主なビジュアルとサウンドの源は、それぞれ日本の書道と西洋のフルートです。書道は、リアルタイムのコンピュータグラフィックスによってダイナミックな3Dオブジェクトとして表現され、展示空間において連続的に変化する視覚的な風景として映し出されます。同様に、聴覚的な風景は、音響と電子的に変換されたフルートの音で構成されています。観客は空相において特別な役割を担っています。
空相アートワーク制作チームは、日本とカナダの4人のアーティストが、それぞれの専門分野を生かしながら、国際的かつ多分野にわたるコラボレーションを通して結成されました。チームは書道家のハタナカ・アイコ（東京）、フルート奏者のマクレガー・タケシ（バンクーバー）、ビデオアーティストのカンダ・リョウ（東京）、サウンドスケープアーティストでインタラクティブシステム開発者のコバヤシ・ヨウタ（バンクーバー）から成り立っています。
このインスタレーションはStudio Program Soundsによって制作され、New Media Gallery、Anvil Centre、Formscape Arts Societyの協力のもと、カナダ芸術協会、バンクーバーニューミュージック、ICICS、ブリティッシュ・コロンビア大学音楽学部、バンクーバーアートギャラリーから財政的および現物的支援を得て発表されます

Kūsou 空相 - An immersive audio-visual installation

Kūsou is an immersive audio-visual installation. The primary visual and sound sources for Kūsou are respectively Japanese calligraphy and Western flute. The calligraphy is represented as dynamic 3D objects through real-time computer graphics and rendered spatially in the exhibit space as a continuously transforming visual scenery. Similarly, the audible scenery consists of acoustic and electronically transformed flute sounds. The audience plays a special role in Kūsou.
The Kūsou artwork production team was formed through an international and interdisciplinary collaboration of four artists in Japan and Canada, each member bringing their expertise from the respective artistic field.
